As a Montessori teacher and the father of two beautiful children, I have to remain conscious of my children and my students need to learn more than numbers and letters—they should also learn how to shine from within.
Herein lies the importance of the “Love Light” in Montessori. It is a unique Montessori activity in which during a magical circle time, children take a moment to reflect on what makes each of them unique:
- Their skin color
- Hair and eye color
- Their clothes, interests, and even their age
But what truly unites them is something far deeper—their Love Light.
What Is the Love Light?
The Love Light is the radiant spirit of love, kindness, and peace in every person. It is inspired by Sonnie McFarland’s “Honoring the Light of the Child”. Irrespective of your age, it is always there—ready to shine brightly when you feel happy, loved, or helpful.
Even when it dims due to sadness, frustration, or tiredness… it never disappears. And with the right tools—like deep breathing, compliments, or helping others—it begins to glow again.
Furthermore, it never disappears even when it gets suppressed due to sadness, frustration, or tiredness.
Teaching Children to See Themselves and Each Other with Love
Through thoughtful lessons like:
- Wearing a Love Light symbol when they’re feeling peaceful
- Keeping their Love Light in a special basket
- Receiving and giving genuine compliments
- Understanding that all people are different—and beautiful
Simple but Powerful Montessori Moments
From deep breathing exercises to joyful affirmations like “I focus on my Love Light” and “I tell my body to be still,” these Montessori moments are not just calming—they are transformative.
This approach makes emotional intelligence and self-love a part of everyday learning. And the results? Children who feel seen, valued, and deeply connected to others.
The Love Light Montessori Philosophy is a reminder that education is not just about bookish learning –it’s about nurturing a spirit of peace within every child.
