Dr. Maria Montessori, the visionary educationist, turned simple chores, tasks, and even child’s play into useful, early sensorial exercises. A practical example of such activity is Montessori walking in a straight line.
This activity involves making a child walk on a pre-drawn line. Walking in a straight line is beneficial for a child’s body awareness, coordination, and concentration. Furthermore, it is suitable for children aged 2-6.
This activity does not require any prior preparation. You can do it by following some easy steps.
Here’s how:
Walking On The Line Montessori Activity For Toddlers:
As a Montessori teacher, I was well aware that I needed to introduce almost all the preliminary Montessori practical life activities to my children before admitting them to a reputed Montessori.
As a result, whenever I got the chance to introduce a Montessori activity to them, I never missed them.
For this activity I only needed:
- Chalk or tape
- A safe area to walk on
How did I do it:
- I drew a line with the chalk.
- Next, I demonstrated the activity to my children by saying.” You can have your turn after Daddy”
- Then, I walked effortlessly on the line maintaining balance.
- After that, I invited my children to try it. ( I never forced them to try anything.)
- My duty was to provide them with a fun and stress-free learning experience.
After my children got accumstomed to walking in a straight line, I tried the following variations to increase the challenge :
- Walk heel-to-toe along the line.
- Carry a small basket while walking.
- Place a book on their head and walk without dropping it.
- Hold a small flag and walk straight.
- Walk while holding a bell—without making a sound!
- Carry a cup filled with water to the brim—without spilling it!
