Dr.Maria Montessori designed the practical area in her education system to enhance fine motor skills in children and help them cope with everyday life.
She has familiarized us with Teaching Learning Materials that we can easily replicate at home. One such practical life activity is the Clothesline activity.
Furthermore, everyone universally acknowledges that the purpose of Montessori education is to represent the children’s interests and guide them in the right direction.
Through structured and unstructured Montessori activities and keen observation, they gradually develop independence, concentration, and a love for learning.
Based on my 16 years of teaching experience and familiarity with parenting of two beautiful children, I will show how easily I have done this activity with my students and my children. Additionally, I am sharing with you a Montessori Clothesline activity worksheet.
Montessori Clothesline Activity:
Before introducing the Clothesline activity I would like to make it crystal clear that I have done this activity with my students and my children (on several occasions) using household items.
I pointed out to them to look at my neighbor’s verandah. They set up a clothesline to dry their wet clothes. After that, I told them that we were going to set this up in our room.
At first, I asked my children to put all the items like string, tape, or tie (e.g., knobs), socks, mittens, towels, small clothes clothespins, or clips.
Then I told them to watch what I was going to do with these things.
Next, I placed the tray on the table and with the help of string and tape set up the line. Then I started to squeeze the clothespins one by one and attached them in the string. Simultaneously, I put their clothes one by one in line with the help of clothespins.
After the demonstration was over, I asked my elder son to do the same. He, effortlessly, started to do the same. Then it was my younger daughter’s turn. Although she was hesitant and shaky at first, she too began to do well in this activity.
Finally, we completed the activity and continued it for a couple of months.
