Montessori lock and key activity is a practical life activity. This activity testifies to the Montessori Method which encourages hands-on learning, independence, and the development of practical life skills.
Moreover, this seemingly easy Montessori activity helps children refine their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving abilities.
I have here prepared a step-by-step guide relating to this activity that includes:
- Lock and key activity for preschool
- Lock and key Montessori example
- What is the objective of lock and key?
- What are the benefits of lock and key activity?
- Montessori Lock and Key control of error
- Lock and key in Montessori
- Lock and key for toddlers
Lock And Key Activity For Preschool:
You know that I have a 7-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter who are now reading in a Montessori school. When they were preschoolers, I introduced several Montessori activities to them. One such activity was the Montessori lock and key activity.
How I Set Up the Montessori Lock and Key Activity:
Materials I Needed:
- A variety of padlocks and keys (different sizes and types)
- A wooden tray or board
- A small storage box or pouch for keys
Optional: Latch boards, combination locks, and switches
First of all, I showed my children how to insert the key into the key. Then I showed the process of how to turn it open. While doing this, I diligently explained to them the movement and function of the key.
Next, I allowed them to try different keys and locks. I also let them find out which key fit which lock.
After that, I wanted to increase the challenge to enhance the learning experience. Hence, I gave them combination locks, hasps, and latches.
Continuing with the same lock and key activity sometimes seemed boring to me and my children. They often asked me to do something different with lock and key.
As a result, I used to try the following variations:
- I often let my children practice unlocking a small suitcase, bag, or door.
- I frequently asked my children to unlock all locks within a certain time which added an extra element of fun.
- I also placed multiple locks and keys in a basket and let them match the correct key to each lock.
